    L. Cartan Sumner serves as in-house counsel with Emerson’s Copeland division. He was Vice President of International Compliance (2018 – 2022) at Centene Corporation, responsible for compliance, governance, corporate policies, contract negotiations, and select transactions associated with Centene’s global operations. He served as leader of EU compliance, data protection, and risk management teams.

    Sumner was previously Vice President of International Government Relations with Peabody Energy in St. Louis, Missouri. In this role, he is responsible for working with governments to create a policy friendly framework for the greater use of coal to meet growing energy needs and supporting Peabody’s global expansion.

    Sumner previously served as Director of Corporate Development with Peabody from September 2001 – October 2007. During that time, he was a member of the company’s mergers and acquisitions team participating in multiple domestic and international transactions, including Peabody’s acquisition of Australia’s Excel Coal Limited in 2006 as well as its purchase of the U.S., Australian and Venezuelan coal assets of RAG Coal International in 2004.

    Prior to joining Peabody Energy, Sumner was Director of Corporate Development with RPM, Inc., a specialty chemicals holding company based near Cleveland, Ohio where he managed acquisitions, divestitures and new market development assignments in the United States,EuropeandLatinAmerica. Priortothat,SumnerservedasDirectorofLatin American Operations for St. Louis-based Carboline Company, a subsidiary of RPM, and as an attorney in private practice.

    Sumner is a 1987 graduate of Vanderbilt University. He completed the combined J.D. / M.B.A. joint degree program at Washington University in St. Louis in 1991 as well as the Merger Week executive education course at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management in2000.
