Eleven distinguished senior McDonnell Scholars competed for top honors and recognition at the annual McDonnell Academy PhD-in-3D competition held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. These Scholars faced the challenge of distilling their research into a compelling three-minute presentation for a non-specialist audience, igniting fierce competition and spirited discussions among the panel of judges. The judges panel included Guillermo Rosas, McDonnell Academy ambassador to Tecnológico de Monterrey and professor of political science at WashU; Cartan Sumner, member of McDonnell Academy External Advisory Council and vice president, senior associate general counsel at Copeland; Ruth Watt, manager of STEM events at the Saint Louis Science Center; and Chuanmei Zhu, McDonnell Academy alumnus and associate director for PhD & postdoctoral career & professional development at WashU.
The Scholars showcased a compelling array of research topics, ranging from cutting-edge cancer screening technologies to exploring the environmental and social impacts of online shopping. Each participant impressively condensed years of rigorous study into engaging three-minute segments, captivating the audience with their profound knowledge and enthusiasm.

As the competition unfolded, judges were tasked with the challenging decision of choosing winners from this exceptionally talented pool. After extensive deliberation, the awards were presented to Scholars whose presentations not only demonstrated a thorough grasp of their research areas but also conveyed the broader significance of their work to the audience. Additionally, the People’s Choice Award was determined through live voting, reflecting the high level of engagement and admiration from attendees.
Once again, the PhD-in-3D competition highlighted the innovation, creativity, and relentless pursuit of knowledge that characterize the next generation of researchers, leaving everyone inspired.
Job well done to all of our Scholars and congratulations to our winners!
