I² at WUSTL has conducted two highly successful international workshops, “Applied Clinical Informatics & Data Analytics”, in Santiago, Chile which are compatible with establishing and cultivating sustainable programs for research and training. Central to the success of these workshops include an institutional partnership in the development and delivery of educational content. 

Educational offerings must keep pace with a workforce that is increasingly adept at analyzing big data and implementing digital technologies to transform healthcare delivery. This workshop session is designed to enhance collaborative efforts with our academic colleagues at UDD and with other McDonnell Academy partner institutions, and to share lessons learned for the conduct of international education. We plan to share our early-stage progress in expanding the scope of our educational training and exchange between WUSTL and UDD.

The goal of the project, Integrated Risk Estimation for the New Elderly (IRENE), is to estimate the risk of loss of functionality in people aged 65 years and older in primary health care settings in Chile. Predicting such decline has the potential to efficiently inform patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers about the patients’ prognosis, symptom trajectory, and treatment effectiveness. Data contributing to the risk algorithm includes the electronic health record and surveys collected during usual care. Conicyt IDeA R&D in Santiago, Chile recently awarded I² and our partners at UDD two years of funding for this collaborative, cross-disciplinary initiative that spans I² and UDD.

We recognize that the power of big data and digital technologies can reshape healthcare delivery and help solve global healthcare challenges. This workshop session is designed to enhance collaborative efforts with our existing colleagues at UDD and with other McDonnell Academy partner institutions and to share best practices for the conduct of international research. Our next step for the IRENE project is to develop and validate a digital tool using the risk algorithm being generated by our team. We envision that such a tool will be used by primary care providers with patients at the point-of-care to help mitigate loss of functionality in the older adult population.
